چکیده

In this paper we study context–sensitive versions of bidirectional Optimality Theory (OT). We discuss a problem presented by Jason Mattausch which shows that context–sensitivity may lead into circularity. In order to be able to represent it we introduce a fundamental structure for bidirectional OT which we call Blutner structure. The discussion of Mattausch’s Example leads us to combine bidirectional OT with Dynamic Semantics.

On Coordinating Interpretations - Optimality and Rational Interaction

In this paper we investigate some questions about coordination and interpretation which have been addressed by bidirectional Optimality Theory (Bi–OT). We consider examples from anaphora resolution, and there especially the role of epistemic contexts and expectations. We look at communicative acts as joint projects following H.H. Clark (1996) and model them by using multi–agent systems with joi...

An Epistemic Interpretation of Bidirectional Optimality Based on Signaling Games

To some, the relation between bidirectional optimality theory and game theory seems obvious: strong bidirectional optimality corresponds to Nash equilibrium in a strategic game (Dekker and van Rooij 2000). But in the domain of pragmatics this formally sound parallel is conceptually inadequate: the sequence of utterance and its interpretation cannot be modelled reasonably as a strategic game, be...

Dynamic Assessment in Iranian EFL Classrooms: A Post- method Enquiry

Derived from the emerging paradigm shift in English language teaching and assessment, there has been a renewal of interest in dynamic assessment (DA) to be used as an alternative to the traditional static testing in language classrooms. However, to date, DA practice has been mostly limited to clinical treatments of children with learning disabilities, and it has not been widely incorporated int...

PERFORMANCE-BASED MULTI-OBJECTIVE OPTIMUM DESIGN FOR STEEL STRUCTURES WITH INTELLIGENCE ALGORITHMS

A multi-objective heuristic particle swarm optimiser (MOHPSO) based on Pareto multi-objective theory is proposed to solve multi-objective optimality problems. The optimality objectives are the roof displacement and structure weight. Two types of structure are analysed in this paper, a truss structure and a framework structure. Performance-based seismic analysis, such as classical and modal push...

Optionality and Gradience in Persian Phonology: An Optimality Treatment

The distribution of the allophones of /?/in certain contexts involves free variation and gradient preferences. The results showed that the differences in judgment between the various categories are not just t...
